RISON - A pair of first quarter touchdowns propelled the Rison Junior Wildcats to a 38-8 nonconference win over the England Junior Lions Thursday night of last week at George Walker Field of Champions. The Junior 'Cats, dominant on both sides of the football, improved to 2-0 on the season with the victory. They will next see action Thursday night at home against the Drew Central Junior Pirates in their 6-3A Conference opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 o'clock.
Coach Brandon Godfrey said the Rison offensive line had a good game against England, citing the blocking up front by the Wells twins, Dedrick and Darrien, Tanner Collins, Rowdy Phillips and Brayden Kelley. Defensively, Godfrey said the Wildcats who had a solid game against the Lions were Kyson Fletcher, Kelley, Ethan Saeler, Dedrick and Darrien Wells.
To start the game, Rison forced a quick three-and-out by the Lions, and on the ensuing punt, Fletcher hauled in the kick and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Kyson Walker ran over a 2-point conversion, and the 'Cats led, 8-0, with just 1:38 gone in the game.
Later in the opening period, with England deep in Rison territory, Saeler and Kelley forced a fumble that Kelley covered at the Rison 21 to stop the threat. From there, Rison drove the length of the field, with Walker covering the final 36 yards for a TD with 21 seconds left in the first period. A Walker-to-Spencer Towery pass play for two points was nullified by penalty, and the Wildcats led, 14-0.
Following a Walker interception, Towery had a long run to inside the England 10 erased by penalty. After an exchange of punts, Rison faced second and 19 from near midfield. But Walker got loose for a 40-yard scamper to the Lions' 14, and then covered the final distance for a TD with just 19 seconds remaining in the first half. Walker then passed to Towery for a 2point conversion, and it was 220 at the break.
