PALESTINE - Riverside scored the game’s only run off a passed ball in the top of the fifth inning as the Lady Rebels edged the Woodlawn Lady Bears, 1-0, in the Class 2A state semifinals Saturday at Palestine-Wheatley High School.Riverside (24-8) advances to its third consecutive trip to the Class 2A state championship game where they will face the Hackett Lady Hornets (28-3). It was the second consecutive year for Woodlawn and Riverside to meet in the semis. The Lady Rebels won last year’s game, 5-0. The game was a pitching duel between Woodlawn’s Lillie Faye McWhorter and Riverside’s Klaire Womack. Both are moving on to the collegiate level next year with McWhorter heading to the University of Arkansas and Womack to Arkansas Tech University. While McWhorter finished with the better stat line at the end of the day, Womack managed to get herself out of couple of jams without giving up a run.McWhorter allowed just two hits and one walk while striking out 18. Womack was tagged for seven hits and four walks with 13 strikeouts.Runs were at a premium for both teams, and Riverside managed to squeeze one in.With one out in the top of the fifth and facing a full count, Carly Jo Womack hit a soft liner perfectly between the leftfielder and centerfielder that rolled slowly near the fence. Carly Womack was able to beat out a throw to third to put a runner in prime scoring position with one out.Riverside tried to squeeze her home with a sacrifice bunt, but the Lady Bears choose to hold Womack at third rather than make the play at first.McWhorter then came back with a strikeout for the second out, but had two balls on the next batter when one got past the catcher, allowing Womack to score what turned out to be the game’s only run.While Woodlawn finished with seven hits compared to two for Riverside, the Lady Bears simply could not come up with a timely hit to cash in on their scoring opport...
