Lady Bears Hang Early Before C-MS Pulls Away

Sometimes district tournament action can throw some curve balls when it comes to seedings for regional tournaments. That seemed to be the case for the Woodlawn Lady Bears last week.Cutter-Morning Star, who tied for the 7-3A conference championship and finished the regular season with 24 wins, suffered a 67-56 upset loss to Mountain Pine in the district tournament, dropping the Lady Eagles to a no. 3 seed in the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament. That put them up against the Lady Bears, the no. 2 seed from the 8-2A, in the opening round last Thursday at Poyen.Unfortunately for Woodlawn, it didn’t take long for Cutter-Morning Star to regain their winning ways as the Lady Eagles prevailed, 48-39, ending the Lady Bears’ season.CMS led 24-20 at the half, but used a strong third quarter to push it lead to double digits, 43-30, by the start of the fourth quarter. Woodlawn did hold the Lady Eagles to just five points in the final period, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 13-point deficit.“We gave up too many second chance points. Also, turnovers did not help either,” said Lady Bears Coach Synthia English. “I thought we competed well. We just couldn’t seem to hit the shots we needed to hit in the clutch to ever gain the lead,” she added.CMS went on to win the Region 4 Tournament, knocking off the 8-3A champion Poyen, 43-38, in the finals at Poyen.Kelsi Mack led the Lady Bears in scoring against the Lady Eagles with 11 points while senior Kathryn Dixon scored 10 in her final game with the program.Dixon had one 3-pointer in the game to extend Woodlawn’s single-season 3-point record to 91....
