POYEN - Six of Woodlawn's 10 hits came in the fifth and sixth innings as the Lady Bears used a late surge to put away the the Poyen Lady Indians, 72, in a non-conference game Tuesday at Poyen.Back-to-back doubles by Jaci Hoyt and Kathryn Dixon gave Woodlawn a 1-0 lead in the third. It stayed that way until fifth when the Lady Bears finally gave themselves a little breathing room.A lead-off single by Madi West followed by a RBI double from Hoyt gave the Bears a 2-0 lead. After a ground out for the first out, Anna Fitzgibbon's groundout scored Hoyt to make it 3-0 with two out.An error followed by a walk and back-to-back singles by Karsyn Chastain and Lily White drove in two more runs to make it 5-0.The Lady Bears tacked on another couple runs in the sixth off an RBI single by Dixon and a sacrifice fly by Fitzgibbon, making it 7-0.Poyen had five hits in the bottom of the sixth to account for both of its runs, but that was a close as it would get.Woodlawn starting pitcher Lillie Faye McWhorter was nearly untouchable over the first five frames. Eleven of the 15 batters she retired came by strikeout, and she did not allow a hit and only gave up just one walk.Chastain threw the final two frames. After giving up the five hits in the sixth, she settled in to retire the Lady Indians in order in the bottom of the seventh.
