WOODLAWN - Lily White went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs as the Woodlawn Lady Bears knocked off the Magnet Cove Lady Panthers, 11-2, Monday to win the 8-2A District Tournament championship Monday at Parkers Chapel.
By virtue of the victory, Woodlawn, 27-4 overall, will be the 8-2A’s no. 1 seed going into the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament set to begin Thursday, May 8, at Woodlawn. The Lady Bears are scheduled to take on the Murfreesboro Lady Rattlers, the no. 4 seed from the 7-2A conference, at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lady Bear Field. Murfreesboro is 6-14 overall.
A victory Thursday assures Woodlawn of a berth in the Class 2A State Tournament to be held May 15-17 at Palestine-Wheatley.
Woodlawn wrapped up a sweep of both the regular season and the district tournament titles Monday with its win over Magnet Cove. Despite the final score, it was a one-run game until the Lady Bears blew it open with seven runs in the fourth.
The Lady Bears went up 1-0 in the first when White started the frame with a double and then scored on Lillie Faye McWhorter’s sacrifice fly.
It stayed that way until the fourth when McWhorter led off with a double, and one out later, Lacy Rauls reached on an error. That error allowed McWhorter’s courtesy runner, Chloe Place, to cross home to make it 2-0.
Karsyn Chastain then followed with a single before a fly ball resulted in the second out. Maeley Simmons then singled and White followed with a double to drive in two more runs to make it 4-0.
Kathryn Dixon then had a RBI single, and after Kendall Tooke drew a walk, the bases were loaded. McWhorter then hammered her second double of the inning, allowing all three runners to score to make it 8-0.
Magnet Cove scored both of its runs in the top of the fifth using a walk, a single with an error, and a ground out.
The Lady Bears answered both runs in the bottom of the fifth. After the first two batters were retired, Bay Aud and Simmons had back-to-back hits before McWhorter followed with yet anot…
