Lady Wildcats Hold Off DC To Win Southeast Tourney

MONTICELLO - The Rison Lady Wildcats were able to hold off the Drew Central Lady Pirates, 43-41, last Friday to win the Southeast Arkansas Holiday Tournament inside the Drew Central High Gym at Monticello. Rison knocked off Class 4A Monticello, 68-55, in the first round before edging Class 5A White Hall, 50-46, in the semifinal to earn a berth in the finals against the host team. The turning point of the game took place in the second quarter after the Lady 'Cats erased a 1311 deficit at the end of the opening period to go in front 26-22 by halftime. Three-pointers from Destiny Lea and Layne Potter helped fuel the second-quarter run as well as Rison going 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Both teams could not get much going offensively in the third quarter as the Lady Wildcats scored just six points off treys by Potter and Alysia Walker. The Lady Pirates, meanwhile, struggled at the free throw line, hitting just one-of-four attempts but were still able to shave a point off Rison's lead with three field goals. The Lady 'Cats were able to withstand a fourth-quarter run by Drew Central as they connected on 7-of-12 free throw attempts in the final frame. Carlese Johnson went 5-of-8 at the charity stripe to score seven of her 11 points in the fourth. Lea led Rison in scoring with 13 points followed by Johnson with 11 and Potter with nine. The Lady Wildcats improved to 10-6 overall with the win.
