RISON - The Rison Lady Wildcats overcame a horrendous night at the free throw line and a scrappy bunch of Woodlawn Lady Bears to pull out a 42-38 win in overtime Tuesday night in a packed Rison Gym.
Woodlawn entered the 8-2A conference game with just one league victory, but the Lady Bears put forth one of their better efforts of the season as they rallied late in the second quarter to take a 16-13 lead at the half.
But Rison came storming back, using an 8-1 run at the start of the third quarter to move back in front. Destiny Lea had two of her three 3-pointers for the game during the third period as the Lady Wildcats took a 28-20 lead into the final period.
But the Lady ‘Cats woes at the free throw line proved to be their undoing in the final frame as the Lady Bears got hot from the charity stripe and ended up drawing even, 34-34, to close out regulation.
After going 1-for-10 at the free throw line in the first half, Woodlawn was 9-of-14 over the final two quarters, including 7-of-11 in the fourth quarter.
Rison, meanwhile, struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 3-of-21 attempts in the second half and 0-for-11 in the fourth quarter. Overall, the Lady Wildcats were 9-of-38 at the free throw line for the game.
The Lady ‘Cats, however, were able to regain control in overtime as couple of baskets by R’erel Roshell and another from Breanna Taylor help Rison get the win.
Rison Coach Seth Taylor said two starters, La’Drea Hamilton and Carlese Johnson, did not play. He praised Woodlawn Coach Logan Adair for his team’s preparation for the game.
Destiny Lea led the Lady ‘Cats with 14 while Shermyah Bracey had eight. Kathryn Dixon had 11 for Woodlawn.
