South’s No. 2 Seed at Stake For Bears, Tigers on Friday

WOODLAWN - Playoff seedings will be on the line this Friday night when the Woodlawn Bears travel to Brinkley to face the Tigers in a battle for the no. 2 seed from the eight-man South Conference.The junior high teams are scheduled to play at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m.Woodlawn improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play with a 64-26 road win over the Marvell Mustangs last week. Brinkley is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in league play after having an open date last week.Both teams have only one conference loss apiece, and both of those came against the top-ranked Strong Bulldogs, which has already locked up the South Conference championship with a 5-0 record. Woodlawn fell at home to Strong 52-14, while Brinkley lost 54-8 at Strong in the Tigers’ last game played on Oct. 25.The winner of Friday night’s game will finish second in the league and will host the no. 3 seed from the North Conference in the first round of the playoffs next week on Nov. 15. The loser, meanwhile, will finish third and will have to travel to Cedar Ridge,the no. 2 seed from the North, to open the playoffs on Nov. 15.Bears Coach Zach Meyer described Brinkley as basically another version of their South Conference opponents blessed with speedy skills players and an elusive quarterback like Dermott, Marvell and Strong.This week’s test for the Woodlawn defense will be containing the Tigers’ 6-0, 175-pound sophomore quarterback Alande Davis, who replaces All-State selection Mitchell Hicks.Meyer said Davis is similar to Marvell quarterback Terry Bledsoe who the Bears faced last Friday night. Bledsoe had a 59-yard touchdown run in that game while hitting a 47-yard touchdown pass as well.And like Bledsoe, Meyer said Davis likes to find the edge to utilize his speed, and when he throws the ball, it is usually deep. Meyer said his defensive ends will have to once again be tested and will have step it up this week to contain...
