RISON - There's a saying in sports that "speed kills." The Rison Wildcats found that out last Friday night in their homecoming matchup with the Lake Village Beavers.Rison simply had no answer for Lake Village quarterback Roderick Conic, Jr. as he rushed for 175 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Beavers capitalized on four Wildcat turnovers to take control in the second half for a 52-12 victory at George Walker Field of Champions.Rison fell to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in league play with the 83A conference loss while Lake Village improved to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference. The 'Cats fell into a four-way tie for fourth place in the 8-3A standings with Lake Village, Drew Central and Palestine-Wheatley.That final score was hard to comprehend considering that the Wildcats were only down by 10 and had a first down at the Lake Village 20 with just under 4 minutes left in the third quarter.But after the next three plays resulted in a 4th-and-16 situation, Kyson Walker's pass to Bishop Butler came up shot at the Beaver 15. Two plays later another Lake Village speedster, A.J. Wilson, broke free for a 79-yard touchdown run. That busted the dam as the Beavers ended up scoring 30 points over the final 14 minutes to win the game going away.After Wilson's long run and Conic's conversion run made it 30-12, the 'Cats turned it over on their next series at the Rison 45. Three plays later, Wilson was in the end zone again on a 16-yard run. Another Conic run made it 38-12 with just 22 seconds left in the third.On Rison's ensuing possession, the Beaver's Alex Akins stripped the ball away and raced 57 yards for another touchdown with 9:46 left in the game. Conic added the two-pointer to make it 46-12.After another fourth down stop of the Wildcats by Lake Village gave the Beavers possession at their 34.
