Weatherford's Treys Propel Bears Past 'Cats in Finale

RISON – Garrett Weatherford drained four of his five 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Woodlawn Bears used an explosive run in the second half to turn back the Rison Wildcats, 76-48, Friday night in the regular season finale for both teams at the Rison Gym. By virtue of its victory, Woodlawn finished in a three-way with Fordyce and Junction City for the 8-2A regular season championship. All three teams finished at 10-2 with the Bears finishing the regular season at 17-7 overall. Rison, meanwhile, was 1-11 in conference play and 1-21 overall. Woodlawn seemed to be in to-tal control at the end of the first quarter as the Bears used a balanced scoring attack to build an 18-2 lead. However, a layup by Z'Kyler Walker followed by a 3-pointer from freshman Ethan Sealer triggered an 9-0 run by the Wildcats to start the second forcing Woodlawn Coach Logan Adair to call a timeout with 4:24 left before the half with the Bears lead cut to 18-11. Weatherford then sparked a run by Woodlawn as his trey followed by a steal and layup pushed the Bears back to a double-digit lead at 28-15. But Rison would end the quarter on an 8-0 run with James Mitchell nailing back-to-back three followed by freshman Kyson Walker making a steal and layup in the final seconds of the first half to pull the 'Cats to within 28-23 of the Bears at the break. Woodlawn, however, came out hitting on all cylinders in the third quarter. A couple of free throws by Raylon Lawson followed by a trey from Weatherford pushed Woodlawn's lead back to double-digits, 33-23, before , Z'Kyler Walker answsered with a couple of buckets to close it to 33-27. That would be as close as it would get for the remainder of the game as Weatherford and Lawson keyed a 14-2 Woodlawn run that put the Bears in control.
