Woodlawn Starts Season 2-1; Blow Out Hermits, Indians

WOODLAWN - A trio of Bears scored in double figures as Woodlawn blew out the Poyen Indians, 57-27, last Friday night at Woodlawn. After going up 9-2 by the end of the first quarter, Woodlawn outscored Poyen 21-7 in the second to build a 30-9 lead by halftime. It didn’t get any better for the Indians in the third as the Bears stretched it to a 54-19 margin by the start of the final period. Sophomore Garrett Weatherford continued to make strides on the varsity level by leading the Woodlawn scorers with 15 points. Raylon Lawson followed with 14 while Jaxson Martin had 12. The Bears improved to 2-1 overall with the non-conference victory. Woodlawn 79, Hermitage 42 Both teams got off to a blistering start, but Woodlawn was able sustain that pace beyond the first quarter as the Bears raced by the Hermitage Hermits, 79-42, in a non-conference game last Thursday inside the Woodlawy Gym. A total of 53 points were scored in the first period alone as Woodlawn was hot early, jumping out to a 32-21 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Bears finally began to play some defense in the second quarter as they used a 22-7 frame to open up a 54-28 lead by halftime. The Bears were able to extend that to a 71-34 advantage by the end of the third quarter. Woodlawn had five players score in double figures with Raylon Lawson finishing with 18 points after hitting two 3-pointers and going 6-for-6 at the free throw line.  Garrett Weatherford followed with 17 while Jaxson Martin had 14, Caleb Martin had 13 and Landen Booth had 12. Bauxite 51, Woodlawn 48 Class 4A Bauxite used a late scoring spurt and took advantage of Woodlawn’s poor night at the free throw line as the Miners edged the Bears, 51-48, in the first round of the Bill Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Nov. 28 at Haskell Harmony Grove High School.
