Young Paces Jr. Bears Win

WOODLAWN - Carson Young scored two touchdowns while rushing for 87 yards on four carries to lead the Woodlawn Junior Bears past the Marvell Junior Mustangs, 30-20, in what was essentially a 77th grade game.Woodlawn improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play with the win, and have a chance to win the South Conference championship with a win against Brinkley Friday.With Marvell suiting out just eight players and most being 7th graders, Woodlawn played its starting unit a couple of series and before a running clock was implemented for most of the game. The starting unit's first possession, however, ended with an interception off a tipped ball.The Junior Bears' Miles West erased that turnover, however, when he recovered a Junior Mustang fumble on the next play at the Marvell 38. Two snaps later, Brody Richardson scored on a 25-yard run. Quarterback Greyson Jones ran in the twopointer to make it 8-0.With mostly 7th graders in the game, Woodlawn lost a fumble on its next possession, and after a blocked punt gave the Junior Bears' possession at the Marvell 17, D.C. Heflin scored on a 16yard run two plays later. The two-point attempt was stopped to make it 14-0.With the clock running, Woodlawn's Logan Doss, Easton Franks and Ashton Edwards all had tackles for losses on the Junior Mustangs' next series, and after a short punt, the Junior Bears took over at the Marvell 22.Young, a 7th grader who was moved from running back to quarterback with the reserves, lost the handle on the snap gathered it back in and went 22 yards into the end zone with 21 seconds left. Jack Reed had the twopointer to give Woodlawn a 22-0 lead at the break.Marvell had a 75-yard touchdown run on the the second play of the second half, and after a successful two-point conversion, cut the Junior Bears' lead to 228.
