DERMOTT - Carson Young may have scored five touchdowns in a single game before, but certainly not the way he did it last Friday afternoon at Sportsman’s Field in Dermott.
Young scored four different ways as the Woodlawn Junior Bears blew out the Dermott Junior Rams, 44-16, in South Conference action.
Woodlawn improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference with the victory. It was the Junior Bears sixth consecutive win.
Young finished the game with two rushing touchdowns, a pass reception for a touchdown, a punt return for a touchdown and an interception return for a touchdown.
His heroics started early when he took the second snap of the game 58 yards for his first score. Remi Horner’s conversion run gave the Junior Bears an early 8-0 lead.
Woodlawn then recovered an onside kick, and after a 16-yard quarterback keeper by Grayson Jones and 21-yard run by Bentley Hoyt, Young was back in the end zone again on an eight-yard run. The two-point attempt was short, making it 14-0.
The Junior Bears came up with another recovery on an the ensuing onside kick and eight plays later Jones scored on a three-yard quarterback keeper. The conversion attempt was fumbled, leaving it 20-0.
Dermott finally got its first possession of the game when Woodlawn’s kickoff went out of bounds. The Junior Rams, however, were forced to punt after three plays.
Taking over at the Junior Bear 34, Jones found Young along the sidelines for a 66-yard touchdown strike on the first play of the series. Jones ran in the two-pointer to make it 28-0.
The Woodlawn defense then forced another punt, and this time Young returned it 63 yards for his fourth touchdown. Jones added another conversion run to extend the lead to 36-0, invoking a running clock for the second half.
On the first offensive play of the third quarter, Young picked off a Dermott pass and returned it 39 yards for another TD. Jones added another two-pointer to give the Junior Bears a 44-0 lead.
