Dear Editor,

Thank you to everyone who has shared experiences involving outside contractors working in Cleveland County. Your willingness to share your concerns and documentation is greatly appreciated. Every response helps us better understand the challenges facing our county.

On Monday, November 2, a presentation will be made to the Cleveland County Quorum Court, including a proposed draft ordinance intended to provide an initial framework for examining how our county might better address situations involving contract labor and prevent further damage to private property.

This is a starting point for discussion, not a finished solution. Our objective is to work constructively with county officials, residents, and other interested parties to explore reasonable measures that protect our citizens, property, and natural resources.

The urgency of this effort has become painfully clear to my family.

On October 7, a fire broke out on our family’s property on the eastern side of the county, burning approximately five acres of timberland and threatening nearby structures. Our saving grace was low wind conditions.

On October 21, fourteen days later, the fire reignited, resulting in two additional flare-ups. As a child, I remember my father fighting fires on other people’s land, yet this forest fire on property inherited from my maternal grandparents is a first in my lifetime. This fire never should have happened.

We are deeply grateful to law enforcement, our volunteer firefighters, Arkansas forestry personnel, and concerned neighbors who worked to protect lives and property.

These repeated outbreaks underscore the extraordinary danger presented by our current drought conditions. A fire that appears extinguished can remain a serious threat long after the flames have disappeared.

With deer season approaching—especially for non-resident hunters—due diligence and respect for Judge Donald Triplett’s burn ban are paramount.

This effort is not simply about what happened on one family’s land…
