Woodlawn junior running back Griffin Manes rushed for a career-best 308 yards and scored five touchdowns as the Bears overcame some early struggles to dominate the Friendship Aspire Jaguars, 52-14, for homecoming Friday night at the Carl Jones Sports Complex. Friendship, a charter school in Pine Bluff in its second year of football, capitalized on an interception to start the game to go on top 6-0. The Bears answered with a long drive capped by Manes’ first TD on a nine-yard run to go up 8-6 and never trailed again. Manes had touchdown runs of 14, 10, 50 and 83 yards against the Jags. All-State performer Ethan Saeler, who played quarterback last year, returned to the field as a running back against Friendship after undergoing arm surgery over the summer. Saeler had 57 yards rushing with a touchdown and was named the defensive player of the game by defensive coordinator Alan Neill. The Bears improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in South Conference play with the win.
