10 YEARS AGOJUNE 10, 2015The Woodlawn School Board unanimously approved pay raises for both certified and classified personnel Monday and - after discussing it a second time around - decided to give the staff a one-time payment of $250 to end the 2014-15 school year. In other business, the board finally found a figure it could live with and approved a bid of $127,397 from Ideal Construction to begin work on the new fitness trail on the school campus. Over the winter, the Woodlawn district was awarded a $150,000 grant from the Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas to build a new fitness trail on the school campus.Mayor Vernon Dollar has announced that the City of Rison has received $93,700 from Union Pacific Railroad to make repairs to a city street following a train derailment back in January. Scheduled for resurfacing is East First Street from the intersection at Main to just beyond Oak Street, where the railroad crossing is located and the site of the derailment. The improvement is due to all the damage that was done from heavy equipment that had used First Street in order to remove the derailed cars and replace track.A presentation entitled "Rison Shine and the Homesteading Movement" won the People's Choice Award during a state-wide community/economic development conference held last week in North Little Rock. Rison was the smallest community represented in the competition.Wake-Up Woodlawn is the name of the new community development group that was formally organized last Tuesday at the Woodlawn Community Center.
