Proposed Poultry Farm at Woodlawn Draws Opposition

Body

A proposal to build six poultry houses near the Woodlawn community has drawn opposition from resident Steve Orr, who worries about odor, environmental effects, and falling property values. The USDA’s Farm Service Agency issued a public notice seeking comments on a draft environmental assessment for the project, classified as a large concentrated animal feeding operation. Orr discovered the proposed site is less than a mile from Woodlawn School and near numerous homes and businesses. He urged residents on Facebook to oppose the plan, citing local examples of poor carcass disposal at other farms. Written comments can be submitted to Adam Kaufman at Farm Service Agency, 419 West Gaines Street, Monticello, AR 71655. Comments will be accepted through Dec. 26.
