The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission confirmed that white-tailed deer from neighboring Grant County as well as Sevier County have tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD) — the first cases in both counties. The infected deer, all bucks, were harvested near Sheridan, Grapevine, and De Queen Lake. Testing was verified by the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Officials said surveillance efforts will increase, though no new hunting regulations will be implemented this season. CWD is a fatal neurological disease affecting deer and elk, first detected in Arkansas in 2016. Since then, over 68,000 animals have been tested statewide, with 2,278 confirmed positive cases.
