The board of the Cleveland County School District approved a resolution Tuesday night to join 12 other school districts across southeast Arkansas in asking the state Board of Education for waivers allowing them to hire individuals without teaching certificates due to a lack of applicants for vacant teaching job. District superintendent Johnnie Johnson said it is essentially asking the state for permission to hire "long-term substitutes" for one year. Johnson reported that there are 83 teaching vacancies among 14 school districts which are part of the Southeast Arkansas Cooperative. Two of the 83 vacancies are in the Cleveland County School District.
Recent complaints received by the Rison Police Dept. from citizens of the town were addressed by Chief Josh Bolland, including four-wheelers and dirt bikes riding on city streets, people driving too fast, running stop signs, and loud music being played.
Response to the Cleveland County Community Theater's first-ever production, set for this weekend, has been strong, with one show completely sold out and the other nearly sold out. The theater group will be presenting a dinner theater entitled "Murder at the Pie Auction," a murder mystery comedy, Friday evening in Rison and Saturday evening in New Edinburg.
The ongoing effort to restore the historic buildings at Pioneer Village in Rison achieved its first goal last week, when a contractor finished interior repairs inside the century-old mercantile building. Now, the efforts will turn to finding more money and/or labor to continue the process with the other buildings at the Village.
