An unexpected line of strong thunderstorms, packing high straight-line winds, knocked out power and blocked roadways with fallen trees throughout Cleveland County last Thursday evening starting about 6:30. Many areas of the county were without power for about 24 to 48 hours after the storm.
Voters who participate in the upcoming school elections this September could be the first to use the new voting equipment that was recently delivered to Cleveland County, thanks to a quarter-million grant. Cleveland was one of only five counties in the state to get the voting machine grants.
Rison Police Chief Josh Bolland introduced his newest officer, Jason Nealy, to the Rison City Council Tuesday night. The hiring of Nealy brings the Rison Police Dept. back to a staff of three officers, which includes Bolland as the chief and Nealy and Cody Wilson as officers. Bolland was charged with rebuilding the police department after two long-time officers, Chief Jeff Prescott and Sgt. Greg Herron retired. In addition, the department's other officer, Eric Power, resigned to take another job.
A two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Hwy. 35 near the Cleveland-Grant County line in the Staves community claimed the life of Demarcus Levar Cones, 24, of Fordyce. Thomas Drye, 37, of Rison was reported uninjured and walked away from the accident.

Reaction from local business owners has been mixed after the Arkansas Clean Indoor Air Act went into effect last Friday, banning smoking in nearly all public places across Arkansas. While the Act is drawing criticism from some customers, others understand.
Cleveland County has been placed under a burn ban until further notice due to hot, dry conditions. A cool front that passed through the state last Friday finally ended a string of days with temperatures topping out at 100 degrees or more.
