Sheriff Jack Rodgers asked the Cleveland County Quorum Court if it could keep the county jail open, at least on a temporary basis, by reducing the number of prisoners until a more long-term solution is found. The move comes after the state declared the jail as being in noncompliance with state regulations since there were not enough jailers on staff.
Citing health issues and time restraints, Cleveland County Coroner Joe Rauls announced to the Cleveland County Quorum Court that he will be stepping down from the position effective Nov. 1, 2016. Rauls also said he would be formally requesting that his name be removed from the position in the upcoming general election.
Charlene Freeman and Amber Offutt head into the final week of a campaign to determine the Zone 3 representative on the Cleveland County School Board.
Mayor Vernon Dollar told the Rison City Council it had a person interested in buying a building the city owns within the 200 block of Main Street in downtown Rison. The building currently houses the Sandwiche Shoppe.
Lesley Drye is crowned as the4 2016 Rison High School Homecoming Queen. The Wildcats hold off Strong for a 22-16 victory in the homecoming game.

Test results from the 2006 benchmark exams are in and elementary schools in Cleveland County came out with a mixed bag of results. Despite some improvements, some local elementary schools lag behind the state. Kingsland and Rison elementary schools are put in some phase of the school improvement list, the Arkansas Department of Education announced.
Schools across Cleveland County will begin the 2006-2007 school year on Monday when students report for the first day of classes. High school students at both Rison and Woodlawn will be going into their first year of the new 8-period school day.
