Sheriff Jack Rodgers says he will ask the Cleveland County Quorum Court how it wants to proceed with handling prisoners to keep the county jail in compliance with state regulations. Rodgers said the county will need to hire four jailers at an estimated cost of $151,000 to keep it compliance.
In a related matter, Rodgers reported that about 25 people showed up at Kingsland for the first in a series of public meeting the sheriff is holding around the county to discuss a proposed sales tax for a new county jail.
The Woodlawn School Board approved a budget that includes a 7.7 percent increase in salaries for the 2016-17 school year. The budget also reflects a 5.5 percent increase in revenue for the year.
Rison in the Fall director Roy Phillips announces that registration forms for vendors, pageant/talent show contestants, barbeque cook-off competitors and more will be available online for the 2016 festival. The festival is set for Oct. 15, 2016, at the Pioneer Village.
Rison High School students were among those from across the region to hear oral arguments concerning a Fourth Amendment issue before the Arkansas Supreme Court at the Fordyce Civic Center. The court session was part of the state Supreme Court’s “Appeals on Wheels” program to educate students and citizens about the role of the judicial branch.

The Rison City Council unanimously approved a motion Tuesday night to pass all city permits through the Rison Zoning Commission before issuing final approval for the permits. The action came after it was discovered that two current projects inside the city limits did not meet the city’s zoning ordinance.
The Cleveland County School District will likely be closing on the purchase of 23 acres of land next to the Rison campus soon after the property owners finish cutting the timber at the site. The school district agreed to pay $6,500 per acre for the land, with England Timberlands, owner of the…
