The Cleveland County Quorum Court approved a set of modified ordinances during a special meeting Tuesday night that will put two separate sales tax questions on the November 8 election ballot to support building and maintaining a new 47-bed county jail facility at Rison. Estimated cost of the project is $6.7 million.

Woodlawn School was put under lockdown for about a half hour Tuesday morning after the Cleveland County Sheriff's Dept. received a report of a man in the parking lot of the nearby Woodlawn Grocery who was threatening to commit suicide. A short time later, the sheriff's department was notified that the man had been involved in an accident at Pine Bluff and was being transported to an area hospital.

A special ceremony and dinner honoring local veterans and dedicating the new Cleveland County veterans display at Veterans Park in Rison has been organized for November. The display includes names of 780 veterans displayed on 25 plaques at the park. The names are segregated by conflict and peace time, starting with World War I and continuing through the Middle East conflicts.

A multi-county committee interested in developing a heritage tourism trail associated with the Arkansas Civil War battlefields connected to the Red River Campaign is scheduled to tour sites around the Marks Mills Battlefield near New Edinburg next Monday.

Cleveland County is starting to make plans should the Avian or Bird Flu pandemic become a reality.

Early and absentee voting for the 2006 school elections began Tuesday. The only contested board race in the county is in Zone 7 of the Cleveland County School District between Jeffie Hyatt and Mark Palazzi. 

An "ATV Mud Bog" and a "3-Dimensional Hunting Simulator" have been added to attractions for this year's Cleveland County Fair which will be held here next week.
