Woodlawn Reviewing Fire Sprinkler Options

WOODLAWN - The Woodlawn School Board is starting to review its options regarding what to do with the fire sprinklers after an inspection revealed deficiencies with the system. Superintendent Dr. Kevin Hancock said a yearly inspection conducted by the company that installed the system discovered the issues, and the district now has one year to address the problem. In the interim, Hancock said they have established “fire watches” in both the elementary and high school buildings until the district decides on a permanent solution. Hancock explained there are some different options the district can take with addressing the sprinkler system, ranging from installing water storage systems to digging a well to provide the water for the system. Woodlawn is following the guidelines provided by the Arkansas Fire Marshall’s office until the matter is resolved, Hancock said. On a related note, Hancock said the school board did approve installing a new fire hydrant at the corner of Hwy. 63 and Smith Road. He said the hydrant will provide a water source for the buildings on the south side of the campus. The board did hear academic reports from both the elementary and high school. Both buildings performed well on the annual ACT Aspire tests given last spring. Woodlawn, as a district, finished second overall among the 15 school districts that make up the Southeast Arkansas region. The board also approved a resolution transferring $154,000 from the district’s operating fund to the building fund. The move is a common procedure for many school districts as they try to maintain a level balance in the operating fund from one year to the next.
