POYEN - A three-run first inning set the tone early as the Rison Wildcats rolled by the Poyen Indians, 9-2, in a rain-delayed start to the Poyen Indian Classic held Monday afternoon at Poyen.
With one out, Brock Southerland drew a walk and Blaine Dixon followed with a single to center to put two aboard. Owen Morrison delivered another hit to push one run across. Dixon eventually scored on a passed ball, and then with two out, Morrison scored on an error to make it 3-0.
Rison pushed it to 4-0 on a fielder's choice by Ryan Hyatt in the top of the second before Poyen answered with a run of an error in the bottom the frame to make it 4-1.
The Wildcats made it 5-1 on a two-out double by Lawson Kidd but a lead-off triple and a ground-out scored a run for the Indians in the bottom of the third ot make it 5-2.
That was as close as it would get the rest of the game as Rison added two runs in the fourth off a double by James Jacobs, a single by Jud Terry and a sacrifice fly by Brock Southerland.
The 'Cats padded their lead in the fifth when they scored off a passed ball and an RBI single by Jacobs. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth due to the tournament's two-hour time limit.
Jared Saeler had a strong showing on the mound for his first start of the season, scattering five hits and five walks over the five-inning game.
Morrison led the Wildcat batters with two hits while Terry, Dixon and Kidd accounted for the other Rison hits. Terry, Southerland, Morrison, Kidd, Jacobs and Ryan Hyatt each had an RBI.
Rison improved to 1-1 with the non-conference win.
