WOODLAWN - Lucas Manes and Parker Arnold both ran for more 100 yards as the Woodlawn Junior Bears overcome a sluggish start to bull their way past the Midland Junior Mustangs, 32-14, last Friday afternoon at the Carl Jones Sports Complex.
After Woodlawn had forced Midland to punt on the opening series of the game, the Junior Bears fumbled it away on their first offensive snap of the game. Taking over at Woodlawn 16, the Junior Mustangs needed three plays before breaking loose for a 17-yard touchdown run, giving them a 6-0 lead with 3:51 left in the first quarter.
The Junior Bears quickly answered, however, as Manes took a pitch 49 yards for the score on the first play of the ensuing possession. Arnold powered in for the conversion to make it 8-6 Junior Bears.
Woodlawn extended its lead in the second quarter on another one-play drive, this time coming on a 30-yard scamper by Arnold. He also tacked on the two-point attempt to extend the lead to 166 with 3:09 left in the second quarter.
Arnold followed that with a 52-yard score on the Junior Bears' next offensive snap but it was wiped out by a penalty. On the next play, however, Manes took it 61 yards to the house, pushing Woodlawn's lead to 246 after fullback Ethan White scored on the conversion with 48 seconds left in the first half.
On the first play of the third quarter, Arnold ripped off yet another long run, this one going 60 yards as the Junior Bears went up 32-6 after Colton Simmons tacked on the two-point run.
Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer began to work in some of his reserves at that point. Midland scored its other touchdown on a 67-yard run with 11 seconds left in the third. The two-point attempt was good to make it 32-14.
