10  YEARS  AGOAPRIL  13,  2016Teachers in the Cleveland County School District received an unexpected pay raise Monday night, when the school board decided by a 5-2 vote to double Supt. Johnnie Johnson's recommendation and give certified staff an across-the-board $1,000 pay increase. In addition, classified staff will have $250 added to their pay next year. During discussion, it was pointed out that having a competitive salary is crucial in landing teacher prospects.ARK-O Holding Company, the business that purchased Internet and telephone operations from TDS Telecommunications in Cleveland County, will conduct a public meeting in Rison next Tuesday evening to give customers in the county a chance to ask any questions they have about the change in services.The Woodlawn School Board once again voted to table a decision on a new weight room for high school athletics after an alternative plan was proposed Monday night. The proposal would convert the existing library in the same complex as the gym into a weight room and building a new library where the old elementary classroom facility is currently located next to the administration building/cafetorium. The old elementary building is scheduled to be torn down this summer. The third annual South Arkansas Homesteading Conference continues to grow, as the estimated crowd of more than 500 took in the two-day event held over the weekend at the Pioneer Village in Rison.20  YEARS  AGOAPRIL  19,  2006A proposed new physical education building for Woodlawn Elementary School has been put on hold after bids for the project came in well above what was expected.
