10 YEARS AGOAPRIL 6, 2016Right after the county Road Department was beginning to make progress on damages from recent flooding, another round of heavy rain hit the county last Wednesday, wiping out many of those repairs and forcing Cleveland County Judge Gary Spears to consider how the county is going to pay for the second round. The county received about 13 inches of rain over a multi-day period in early March, with estimated repairs to county roads totaling about $100,000. Then last Wednesday, about five inches of rain fell and wiped out all the progress that had been made to that point in repairs from the first round of heavy rains.Judge Gary Spears told the county Quorum Court Monday night that he is giving the county's solid waste contractor, Get Rid of It of Arkansas, Inc., a month to improve its service or he will begin pursuing a contract with a different company. Spears' remarks came after the county fielded what he estimated to be about 1,000 phone calls over the past two to three weeks from residents complaining about the solid waste service.Auditions for the Cleveland County Community Theater's first-ever production, "Murder at the Pie Auction," will be held next Friday and Saturday. "Murder at the Pie Auction" is a dinner theater comedy that will be presented in July.The Rison City Council approved a resolution Tuesday night that will allow the city to take the next step toward securing a $350,000 loan to install digital water meters to every customer on the system. The council was informed that there are 505 active meters in the system, and of those, 55 are "non-working," which means customers are paying the minimum charge each month.The Woodlawn Bears are off to a 16-0 start to their baseball season, with nine shutout victories and 10 wins by 10 runs or more.20 YEARS AGOAPRIL 12, 2006...
