10 YEARS AGOFEBRUARY 10, 2016The board of the Cleveland County School District is encouraging building principals to begin assessing their facility needs after hearing a presentation from former Superintendent Scotty Holderfield, who is now the facilities coordinator for the Southeast Arkansas Educational Cooperative at Monticello. A new gymnasium at the Rison campus has been one such building project that has been mentioned as a possible improvement. He said the average gym is about 20,000 square feet, which would put the price tag at about $3.7 million.Josh Bolland has been promoted to interim police chief for the Rison Police Department last Thursday at a meeting of the city council. The three-person Rison Police Department is currently in a state of transition following the retirement of long-time police chief Jeff Prescott late last year and the pending retirement of Sgt. Greg Herrron. Also at the meeting, city water operator Jason Phillips reported that the Rison Water Department does have both a short and long-term plan to address the city's water line problems and numerous leaks around the town.The Woodlawn School District held a grand opening last Thursday to officially open the new Woodlawn Fitness Trail located behind the elementary school. The quarter-mile paved walking trail was constructed with a $150,000 grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield's Blue & You Foundation.The Woodlawn School Board heard a presentation on various funding options for facility projects and also approved a bid to construct a new bus barn during its meeting Monday night.
