10  YEARS  AGOJULY  1,  2015A high-speed chase that started in Cleveland County last Friday morning resulted in the arrest of a Virginia man, accused of stabbing his father to death last Thursday. Joshua Carroll Copeland, 31, of Abingdon, Virginia, was taken into custody at 11:45 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 65 north of Dumas. The arrest came after a 30-minute high-speed pursuit that began along Highway 63 in northern Cleveland County. Copeland was accused of stabbing his father, Edsel Copeland, 67, of Abingdon, Virginia, who later died at a hospital in Bristol, Tennessee.In the wake of last Friday's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, declaring that state bans on same-sex marriage are unconstitutional, Cleveland County had yet to receive a request for a marriage license from a homosexual couple as of Tuesday afternoon, county clerk Jimmy Cummings said.Wages for those people who work in Cleveland County still rank below the state and national averages, but the county no longer ranks near the bottom when it comes to pay. The Bureau of Labor Statistics for the U.S. Department of Labor announced last week that the 1,051 people who have jobs in Cleveland County have an average weekly salary of $592 per week, which ranks 56th of the 75 counties in the state. Meanwhile, the report also revealed that the 1,051 people working in the county is the smallest number of workers reported for any county in Arkansas.In Rison last Thursday, a theft scam was carried out on an elderly couple. A male suspect knocked on the couple's door and asked to come inside the home. The suspect told the couple his grandsons were trying to sell flooring, and two males then came in the home with a roll of flooring. They rolled out the flooring and held it up, blocking the view of the couple while another suspect apparently came by them, entered the couple's bedroom and stole jewelry and cash.20  ...
