10 YEARS AGO JUNE 5, 2013 Mayor Vernon Dollar told the Rison City Council Tuesday night that he had sent certified letters to the owners of two 'nuisance properties' within the city, informing them to contact the city about the condition of their property. The letters were the first step in a renewed effort by the city to address unkept properties within the city limits. Dollar said the letters give the owners 20 days to respond before the city begins to take legal action. Ronald Wayne Jones, 31, of Warren, was found guilty of second degree criminal mischief in circuit court here last week for pushing a pickup truck onto the railroad tracks at Kingsland, with the truck being eventually hit and destroyed by a freight train. The incident occurred in August, 2011. Following an altercation with a Kingsland resident during the night of the incident, it was reported that Jones used his vehicle to push an unoccupied truck onto the railroad tracks near the Maple Street crossing, where it was struck by a train shortly before 4 a.m. Afterwards, it was discovered that the truck did not belong to the individual Jones had the altercation with, but instead belonged to a New Edinburg resident. County Judge Gary Spears announced that outside increases in fees and taxes will force a small hike in solid waste fees for customers. 20 YEARS AGO JUNE 11, 2003 The Rison City Council voted Tuesday to raise sewer and water rates in an effort to keep both departments afloat financially. Rison has been awarded the 2003 13-year-old District Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament that will be played at the park here early next month. The Cleveland County Rural Water Board approved additional improvements to the water system between Rison and Staves on Highway 35 North that, according to the board, should further help in alleviating the pressure problems at the southern end of the system.
