10 YEARS AGOMAY 20, 2015The City of Kingsland is owed more than $70,000 in unpaid fines, and city marshal Ronnie Smith asked the Kingsland City Council Monday night if it wanted him to begin making arrests to force people to begin making those payments. Also at the meeting, Mayor Charles Crain said the city is exploring different sites around town as a possible location for a proposed civic center-type facility that would also house a local museum.Woodlawn became the fourth community in Cleveland County to start a community development group after those attending a meeting last Thursday voted to begin developing a long-range community development plan for the area.The Riverside Rebels scored four runs in the third inning and went on to defeat the Woodlawn Bears, 6-1, Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state baseball tournament at Marked Tree. The Bears had advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory over McCrory in the tournament's opening round on Thursday.20 YEARS AGOMAY 18, 2005A volunteer firefighter with the Kingsland Volunteer Fire Department was among three men arrested early Thursday morning in connection with what investigators believe to be a string of arson fires set in the Kingsland area since late 2003. Those arrested were James Michael Pennington, 23, and Christopher Jones, 19, both of Fordyce, and Dustin Tarrance, 20, of Kingsland. Tarrance, according to Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Paul King, had been a volunteer Kingsland firefighter for the past three years. King said the fires remain under investigation and that more arrests could be made.
