10 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 30, 2015 The sale of some land where a new Dollar General store will be built on Hwy. 63, just south of the Hwy. 114 intersection at Calmer, is expected to close today.The Woodlawn School District will soon have about $94,000 more to spend on building projects, thanks to debt restructure, approved by the board. Also, Supt. Dudley Hume reported to the board that the school's enrollment total is 554 students, compared to 542 at the same time a year ago.A county-wide burn ban is back in effect due to the lack of rainfall. This is the second burn ban issued for the county this year.The Kingsland City Council questioned a $6,000 expense for repairing the city's emergency siren system.20 YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER 21, 2005 Mark Rivers of Kingsland leads Sandra Wright of Rison for the Zone 3 seat on the Cleveland County School Board following Tuesday's election. With all three boxes counted, plus absentee and early voting, Rivers led Wright by only three votes, 99-96, with three more votes left to be filled - two military votes and one provisional vote. Cleveland County Clerk Sharon Gray said the vote will not become official until all the votes and/or state-mandated deadlines have been met. Zone 3 is the largest of the seven zones in the Cleveland County School District and is the only one to include portions of both the former Kingsland and Rison school districts. It was reported that 32 percent of the registered voters in the zone turned out for the election. The vote between Rivers and Wright was split geographically.The shelter in Rison for evacuees from Hurricane Katrina was scheduled to close Tuesday after temporary local housing was found for all of the evacuees.In the Woodlawn School District board election on Tuesday, Larry Reynolds, the incumbent, defeated challenger, James 'Clay' Castleberry.
