10 YEARS AGOSEPTEMBER 9, 2015The Cleveland County Quorum Court gave its support Monday night to an agreement between the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department and the City of Kingsland for the county to provide law enforcement for the city. Kingsland officials had inquired about the county taking over patrols of the town after the city council recently voted to do away with its part-time city marshal's position as a cost-saving measure.Cleveland County Treasurer Jack Hopson reported that the balance in the county general fund continues to run about $127,000 ahead of where it was at the same time last year.The annual Cleveland County Fair & Livestock Show will kick off this Saturday with a "Race to The Fair 5K" beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the county fairgrounds. Fair activities will continue all next week, climaxed September 19 with pageants and talent contests.District 5 Justice of the Peace Donnie Herring of the Pleasant Ridge community told the Herald last week that he will be switching from the Democratic party to the Republican party when he files for re-election in November. Herring is the second local elected official to switch from the Democratic to Republican party within the past two weeks.Mayor Vernon Dollar has agreed to meet with city attorney Tom Wynne and Rison Housing Authority director Annette Holmes to go over the details of a 1966 agreement to see if the authority's public housing apartments on Rice Street in the northeast part of town are public or private property. The decision to hold the meeting came after a back-and-forth exchange between the mayor and Holmes during the Rison City Council's monthly meeting Tuesday night. Holmes addressed the council after reading an article about the August meeting in which Dollar told the council that the city could not repair some potholes in the drive that runs through the Tolson Apartments complex because ...
