Potter, Johnson Fuel Lady ‘Cats In 56-52 Win Over Lady Bears

WOODLAWN - Layne Potter scored 20 and Carlese Johnson added 17 as the Rison Lady Wildcats used a strong finish to get past the Woodlawn Lady Bears, 56-52, in a back-and-forth clash between the Cleveland County rivals last Thursday at the Woodlawn Gym. Rison was up 26-24 at halftime before Woodlawn answered with its best quarter of the game,hitting five 3-pointers, including three from Kathryn Dixon, as the Lady Bears moved in front, 43-39, to start the final period. Jaci Hoyt and Sarah Melhorn accounted for the other two long-range shots.  Rison responded by putting together its best frame of the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring Woodlawn 17-9 to take the win.  Johnson had six points for the Lady ‘Cats in the fourth while Destiny Lea scored five. Woodlawn put Rison at the free throw line nine times in the final minutes but the Lady Wildcats connecting on six of those to keep the Lady Bears at bay.  The free throw line proved to be a major factor in the outcome as Rison connected on 20-of-29 for the game (69 percent) and Woodlawn made 13-of-26 (50 percent). The Lady Bears had three players finish in double figures. Dixon led the way with 16 followed by Anna Fitzgibbon and Jaci Hoyt with 11 apiece. Potter and Johnson were the only Lady ‘Cats to score in double figures. Potter turning in one of her best performances of the season by scoring in all four quarters. She hit two 3’s in the first half to help put Rison up at the break.   ...
