RISON - From school districts receiving good news about proposed construction projects to a major announcement regarding the availability of high-speed internet in the county, there were some significant happenings to close out 2024. Here is a look back at some of the top headlines over the last half of the year: JulyThe Cleveland County Quorum Court approved some revised boundaries for the county's volunteer fire department service areas while County Judge Jimmy Cummings announced the received a $183,900 grant to make repairs to the courthouse. Also, a motion to give county employees a paid holiday for Friday, July 5, did not meet the two-thirds majority needed to pass it.Mayor Sharon Crosby announced that the City of Kingsland is seeking five volunteers to serve on a planning commission that will look at ways to use land inside the city as well as areas for future annexation.Renovations to the first of the City of Rison's two water tanks are expected to begin after Mayor Charles Roberts told the Rison City Council that the city will finally begin executing the more than $7 million in grants to improve its water and sewer systems.
