Mayor Charles Roberts told the Rison City Council that the city will take ownership of the old mini-storage building on Main Street after an ADEQ inspection found no hazardous materials inside. However, asbestos and lead paint were discovered in the nearby former Cash Grocery building, which the city purchased in 2024 for demolition.
Kansas State University’s Technical Assistance to Brownfields program is helping identify funding for hazardous-material removal. Once both deteriorating buildings are demolished, the properties will be converted into public spaces.
Roberts also announced plans for a citywide low-to-moderate income survey, which could help Rison qualify for additional grants, including funding for a new fire truck.
