Eudora Mayor Tomeka Butler has filed as the Democratic candidate for the Arkansas State Senate District 1 special election, becoming the party’s nominee after filing just minutes before the deadline. She will face the winner of the Aug. 18 Republican primary between Laura “Missy” Wardlaw and Harrell Wilson in the Nov. 3 special election. Butler, elected Eudora’s first African American female mayor in 2020, says she is running to improve healthcare, education, and economic opportunities in southeast Arkansas. District 1 includes Cleveland, Ashley, Bradley, and Drew counties, along with portions of five other south Arkansas counties.
