Jr. Bears Run Over Jr. Mustangs, 38-20

PLEASANT PLAINS, Ark. - Griffin Manes and Coltan Simmons both rushed for more than 100 yards as the Woodlawn Junior Bears picked up their first win of the season with a 38-20 victory over the Midland Junior Mustangs last Friday afternoon at Pleasant Plains.After forcing the Junior Mustangs to punt on the game's first possession, Manes ripped off a 30-yard gain on his first carry and then raced 51 yards on the next to give the Junior Bears a quick 6-0 lead with 3:39 left in the first quarter. The two-point conversion attempt was fum-bled.Midland answered with its only scoring drive of the first half, marching 56 yards in five plays before ending it with a 44yard touchdown run with 25 seconds left in the opening period. The Junior Mustangs also fumbled the conversion to leave it a 6-6 tie.Manes, however, quickly gave the lead back to Woodlawn when he took the ensuing kickoff 57 yards for a touchdown, his second kickoff return for a score in as many games. Manes also ran in the two-pointer to make it 14-6 with two seconds left in the first quarter.The Junior Bears used a 22yard run by Manes and a 27yard scamper by Simmons to start a five-play , 67-yard drive capped by a two-yard quarterback sneak from 7th grader Bentley Hoyt. Hoyt also kept on the conversion to give Woodlawn a 22-6 lead with 3:29 left in the second quarter.The Junior Bears extended their lead to 30-6 in the third quarter when Simmons scored on a 36-yard run. Hoyt added the two-pointer with 2:37 left in the third.Woodlawn 7th grader Duke Scott then intercepted a Midland pass at the Junior Bears' 44, and after a penalty backed up the Junior Bears five yards, Simmons broke free for a 61-yard run to make it 38-6 after another Hoyt conversion run with 1:20 left in the third.Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer inserted his 7th graders for the rest of the game.Grayson Jones came up with an interception following Simmons' long touchdown run.Midland's fina...
