Bears Look To Contain Elusive Mustang QB

WOODLAWN - Playoff seedings will be a stake for the Woodlawn Bears over the final two weeks of the regular season starting with this Friday’s trip to Marvell to take on the Mustangs in a South Conference game.The junior high teams will kickoff at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams at 7 p.m.Woodlawn currently stands at 5-2 overall and 2-1 in South Conference play. The Bears are currently third in the conference standings, a half-game behind 3-1 Brinkley and a half-game ahead of 2-2 Marvell.The Mustangs are 3-3 overall and have shown improvement over last year’s 1-4 team.After opening the season with a 34-24 loss at Subiaco Academy (which plays in Class 4A for other sports), Marvell bounced back with a 54-22 blowout of Augusta on the road.After getting a forfeit victory against Hermitage in their conference opener, the Mustangs were competitive in a 24-0 loss to Ceder Ridge, which is currently 7-1 overall and sitting in second place in the North Conference standings. Marvell then joined Woodlawn in becoming the only two teams so far this year to score two touchdowns against top-ranked Strong, falling 42-14 in a league loss at Strong. Last week, the ‘Stangs throttled Dermott at home, 42-14.Woodlawn will is coming off a bye week after dominating Dermott 54-6 in their last on-field performance back on Oct. 18.Bears Coach Zach Meyer said they worked on tackling, improving their passing game, and “staying physical” during the off week.As for getting the victory at Marvell, Meyer said it will come down to defending the Mustang’s versatile quarterback. “You’ve got to contain the quarterback,” he said. “He likts to get outsid eand he can throw a little bit too.”One other issue Woodlawn has been working on is recognizing the different formations that Marvell will throw at opponents.
