WOODLAWN - Woodlawn used some timely hits and took advantage of 10 walks as the Bears knocked off the Class 4A Monticello Billies, 6-1, to open their 2025 season at home Monday afernoon.The Bears struck early when Peyton Wells led off the bottom of the first with a single and Garrett Weatherford drew a walk to put the first two batters aboard. Tate Hall then stroked a double to center, scoring Well’s courtesy runner Gage Boykin and Weatherford, putting Woodlawn up 2-0.Neither team would score again until the bottom of the fourth when three walks loaded the bases with two out, setting up sophomore Hollis Holderfield to deliver a three-run double to make it 5-0.Monticello scored its lone run in the top of the fifth off a ground out.Woodlawn added a run in the sixth on Parker Arnold’s sacrifice fly after three walks had loaded the bases.Wells got the start and the win in the season opener. He pitched five-and-two-third innings, striking out eight while scattering five hits and giving up just one walk. Sophomore Logan Clark finished the final one-and-one-third innings allowing one hit and no walks. No Bear had more than one hit in the game. Hall and Holderfield both had doubles while Wells, Arnold, Clark and Mason Edmonds had one single apiece.Weatherford drew three walks in the game while Wells and Holderfield had two apiece....
