WOODLAWN - One advantage the Woodlawn Bears have enjoyed in post-season play over the past few years is their depth in pitching, and that was never more evident than in Saturday’s Class 2A Region 4 final against the Parkers Chapel Trojans. The Trojans struggled to find the strike zone early and often, as the Bears took advantage of nine walks and five hits to score 15 runs in the bottom of the first enroute to a 24-3 victory Saturday. It was Woodlawn’s third straight regional championship and its 13th regional title since 2001.The win gave Woodlawn the no. 1 seed from Region 4 for this week’s Class 2A State Tournament at Palestine-Wheatley High School. The Bears are scheduled to play the Baptist Prep Eagles, the no. 4 seed from Region 3, at 3 p.m. Thursday at Forrest City Sports Complex.Should Woodlawn win, it would advance to a quarter-final game against the Hackett-Riverside winner at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Palestine-Wheatley High School.Saturday’s regional final featured the top two teams from the 8-2A conference in the Bears and Trojans. Woodlawn made it the finals by blowing out Dierks, 11-0, in the opener before getting past Spring Hill, 9-5, in the semifinals on Friday. Parkers Chapel advanced by beating Magnet Cove in a wild 17-11 decision before edging Murfreesboro 2-1 in the semifinals.Bears Coach Tommy Richardson was able to use his pitchers sparingly in the first two regional tournament games, giving him plenty of arms to go to in the finals.
