10  YEARS  AGOJUNE  1,  2016The Kingsland City Council unanimously approved a motion by Alderman Marvin Crain last Thursday to eliminate the city secretary's position held by city recorder/treasurer Leann Huntley. Huntley said after the meeting that she is considering filing a lawsuit over the elimination of the job, claiming that Crain had a "personal vendetta" against her after she had an exchange of words with street worker Howard Holman in December. Crain has denied Huntley's allegations. Huntley was hired as secretary for the city and she is also the elected recorder/treasurer. Mayor Charles Crain said the elimination of the secretary's position does not take away Huntley's duties as recorder/treasurer. The secretary's position pays an annual salary of $20,800, while the recorder/treasurer is paid $5,790 per year.Two people escaped injury after an ice truck clipped a bridge guard rail, turned over and caught fire along Hwy. 79 in Rison Monday afternoon. The driver and a passenger managed to get out of the truck before it was engulfed in flames. Hwy. 79 was closed for up to an hour before opening one lane to let traffic through. The Rison Fire Dept. responded to the fire.Zach Branch, a former head football coach at Woodlawn, was hired as an assistant coach at Rison High School to replace Tristian Knoedl, who resigned to take a job as an assistant principal in the Warren School District. Branch has been coaching at Bauxite after resigning at Woodlawn in January, 2015.An earlier than expected start on construction of the new Woodlawn School library may have the project completed much faster than expected, Supt. Dudley Hume. The old elementary building, which was originally built as a W.P.A. project during the Depression era in the 1930s, is being taken down to make way for the new library.
