Student enrollment is reported up at Rison High School and down at Rison Elementary, while both Woodlawn High School and Woodlawn Elementary reported gains in a survey of schools in the county. Enrollment is also slightly up at Kingsland Elementary School. Rison High School's enrollment is 475, while the elementary school is down to 292. Woodlawn High School's enrollment is reported at 272, while the elementary is up to 311 students. Kingsland Elementary is starting the school year with 109 students on campus.

Cleveland County Judge Gary Spears has called a special meeting of the Quorum Court for next Tuesday to approve the ordinances necessary to put two sales tax questions before voters on the November 8 general election ballot to fund construction of a new 47-bed jail and for maintenance and operation of the jail.

Recent heavy rains and the prediction of more rains throughout the week led to cancellation of the Summer Showdown Rodeo that was scheduled for this Friday and Saturday at the county fairgrounds arena in Rison.

State Atty. General Leslie Rutledge held a roundtable discussion in Rison to hear concerns about regulations and other issues from about a dozen Cleveland County residents.

The Kingsland City Council voted to accept the resignation of Ronnie Smith, water operator, effective August 31. Councilman Marvin Crain told the council that meters had not been read and he felt Smith should resign immediately. The council voted to hire Nick Bennett, a Kingsland resident, to replace Smith with the stipulation that he become fully certified within 90 days or be terminated.

The Marvin "Buddy" and Frankie Hall family of the Hebron community received the honor of 2006 Cleveland County "Farm Family of the Year." The Halls operate a 600-acre farm near Hebron that includes both timber and beef cattle operations.
