RISON - The Arkansas Hare Scramble Championship Series in will in Cleveland County for an off-road motorcycle racing event this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20-21, near the Rye com‐munity.
Donald Mull of Herbine, who is helping organize the event, said the race will be held at a lo‐cation along Curry Road west of the Rye Cutoff intersection near Rye (follow arrows). The event is named the “Screaming Chicken Hare Scramble,” which is play on one of the dominant industries in Cleveland County.
Gate fee is $10 for adults, $5 for youth age 7 to 17, and free for youth age 6 and under. A practice session will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, with the racing program be‐ginning at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 21.
There will be both short and long course races, organizers an‐nounced. The day begins with a 15-minute pee wee race begin‐ning at 8:15 a.m. followed by a 30-minute kids race at 9 a.m. A 45-minute short-course race for the adults will be held at 10 a.m. followed by a 2-hour finale over the long course.
Unlike motocross races that are held on fixed tracks, “hare scrambles” are cross-country motorcycle races held along trails carved out within the natu‐ral terrain of the land. Mull de‐scribed the course for the Screaming Chicken as being a dirt trail through a pine planta‐tion that also incorporates some creek bottoms along the way. He said there are no rocks along the course and there are no big hills to climb, making it an ideal course for those who might be like to try hare scramble racing.
He encouraged anyone who has an off-road motorcycle and would enjoy some cross country riding to take part in the race. Mull said there are classes rang‐ing from age 6 and under through adults.
