PARKERS CHAPEL - Quarterback Jaxson Martin scored on a game-clinching 54-yard bootleg run with 2:02 left as the Woodlawn Bears overcame an early deficit and the loss of some key players to knock off the Parkers Chapel Trojans, 42-28, Friday night at Parkers Chapel.
It was the debut of new Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer and the Bears delivered one of their most productive rushing performances since moving to eightman football. Three players quarterback Jaxson Martin and running backs Caleb Martin and Fisher Hale - all ran for more than 100 yards apiece as Woodlawn amassed 406 yards on the ground.
And much of that came with two key contributors on the sidelines.
Landen Booth was ejected during the opening series of the game when he and Parkers Chapel’s Dylan Davies threw punches at one another after a play. Davies was ejected as well.
“That (losing Booth early) really hurt us,” he said. “He had been working all week as the back-up (running) back and the back-up fullback. That was our plan to use him there. That was a key player gone in the first four minutes.”
Meanwhile, Caleb Martin, who had a huge first half that included an 83-yard touchdown run and a 90-yard kickoff return that was called back, left early in the third quarter after both of his legs started to cramp and lock up. He had 111 yards rushing on 10 attempts when he left the game.
That left the Bears with Hale and Jaxson Martin to carry most of the offensive load in the second half, and both delivered.
Hale had 102 yards on 17 carries with a touchdown. Hale attacked the defensive interior with a series of short runs in the second half that began to wear down the Trojans’ big defensive front in the fourth quarter.
“He finds a way,” Meyer said about Hale. “You always want to talk about finding a way - he finds a way.”
