Woodlawn Using Open Date To Bolster Offensive Play Book

WOODLAWN - Woodlawn Coach Zach Meyer said the Bears will continue to install more of their offensive playbook this week as Woodlawn will have an open date this Friday. Woodlawn is officially off to a 1-0 start in 2022 though the Bears were up on the Brinkley Tigers, 20-12, when the game was delayed after halftime and eventually called due to lightning and inclement weather. Both teams were on the field preparing for the second half when a lightning delay was called. Meyer said the two teams would have had to run at least one play in the third quarter for the game to be declared official. The Bears were set to take the second half kickoff. After this week’s open date, Woodlawn will host Parkers Chapel for a rematch on Sept. 23, and will then finish out the regular season with six consecutive South Conference games. The first four of those league games will be at home. The Bears’ option-based run game under offensive coordinator Trent Young has been very effective over the first two outings this year. Through one-andafirst quarter. half games, Woodlawn has rolled up 558 yards on the ground using 71 rushes to average about 7.9 yards per carry. Over the first two games of the year, the Bears already have six runs of 35 yards or more, including an 83-yard touchdown run by Caleb Martin and a 75-yard touchdown run by Jaxson Martin. The success of the ground game has also allowed quarterback Jaxson Martin to surprise the opposing defense with a pass ever now and then as well. A favorite target so far has been his big tight end, Braiden Kitchens, who had a 17-yard touchdown reception against Brinkley and had a 34-yard catch against Parkers Chapel. Another tight end, junior Aiden Johnson, took a throw from Martin 22 yards against Brinkley but the play was called back. Woodlawn will enter this week’s open date at basically full speed.
