10 YEARS AGO MAY 1, 2013 District 26 State Senator Eddie Cheatham and District 10 State Representative Mike Holcomb gave the Cleveland County Democratic Committee a rundown of the 2013 legislative session during a meeting Tuesday afternoon at the fairgrounds meeting hall in Rison. At 100 days, this was the longest legislative session since 1931, and was also the first time since Reconstruction for both state houses to be controlled by Republicans. Cheatham and Holcomb are both Democrats.
The Woodlawn School Board is expected to wrap up their interviews today of the remainder of the five finalists selected for the superintendent's job. The person selected will succeed Billy Williams, who will become superintendent of the Drew Central School District on July 1.
The Woodlawn Lady Bears edged Junction City, 4-3, to capture the 7AA-East District Tournament at Norphlet Monday night. Junction City had defeated Woodlawn in both regular season contests. On the boys' side of the tournament, Parkers Chapel downed Woodlawn, 9-3, in the title game. The Woodlawn girls will play in the South Regional Tournament at Norphlet, while the Woodlawn and Rison boys teams will compete in the South Regional Tournament at Dierks.
20 YEARS AGO MAY 7, 2003 Following an emotional plea from a county resident, the Cleveland County Quorum Court decided Monday to amend its ordinance that allows eligible households to be exempt from paying residential solid waste fees. In March, the court approved an ordinance that said only county residents who grossed $600 or less per month would be eligible to apply for the exemptions. After hearing the resident's plea, Justice Fred Wegner proposed an amended policy that would give households receiving less than $800 per month some relief as well. Wegner proposed reducing the solid waste fees to $5 per month for households with a gross income of $600 to $700 per month, and reducing the fee to $10 per month for those ...
