WOODLAWN - Peyton Wells held the Class 4A Arkadelphia Badgers to just one run in his pitching debut for Woodlawn Monday afternoon as the Bears picked up a 3-1 victory in the season opener for both teams.Wells, a junior, was solid in his first outing as he scattered five hits, struck out 12 and gave up just one walk over seven innings on the mound.Woodlawn broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when Mason Edmonds drew a one-out walk and Wells followed with a double to plated the first run. Wells' courtesy runner, Gage Boykin, moved to third on a error by the Arkadelphia catcher and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Dillon Lunsford.The Bears added to their lead in the fourth when Tate Hall was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and then advanced to third on a double by Parker Arnold. Grant Coward then hit a fly ball into what turned out to be a double play, but it was enough for Hall to score to make it 3-0 Woodlawn.The Badgers got on the board in the fifth with back-to-back singles with one out, and then scored on a fielder's choice. Wells struck out the next batter to end the threat.Woodlawn loaded the bases on three consecutive walks with two out in the bottom of the fifth before a fly ball ended the inning.Well retired the next six Arkadelphia batters in order to lock down the win.The Bears had just three hits in the game.
