10 YEARS AGOAPRIL 8, 2015Get Rid of It, Inc., the county's solid waste contractor, canceled a scheduled appearance before the Cleveland County Quorum Court Monday night to contest the county's adjusted number of households it is serving under the county's contract. The contractor wanted to voice opposition to the adjusted numbers.Belt Construction of Texarkana was awarded a $355,219 contract last Thursday for sewer projects along Hwy. 35 South, Taylor Lane and Jimmy Wells Lane in Rison. The project will be paid for through a loan and grant money from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The project includes installing new sewer service in areas and making other major improvements.The Cleveland County Quorum Court gave coroner Joe Rauls permission to proceed with any expenses that may be needed to properly put away the remains of a 68-year-old man whose body was never claimed by anyone. The man's body was discovered after neighbors called the county sheriff's department on March 13 to conduct a welfare check on him after not seeing him for a few days at the residence off Hwy. 133 near the Cleveland-Jefferson County Line.In light of a Pine Bluff man being recently killed in an attack by a pack of pit bulldogs, Rison alderman Cleve Reed told Mayor Vernon Dollar and other council members that he felt the city "needs to be taking a look at that," especially since the city has no animal control officer.20 YEARS AGOAPRIL 6, 2005Lengthy doctor visits have prompted Judge Vernon Dollar to ask the Cleveland County Ambulance Service to cease "non-emergency" patient transfers from the nursing home here. Instead, the nursing home will be contracting with a private ambulance service for those transfer services.
